Abstract

This theoretically reflective article discusses the importance of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in fostering friendship between deaf and hearing students in higher education. The issue has intensified, highlighting language as a bridge for interaction within universities, which serve as spaces for coexistence, social exchange, and the strengthening of interpersonal bonds. The study aims to analyze, through the account of a hearing individual, the relationship between Libras, inclusion, and interpersonal interactions, situating the university within the framework of inclusive education and engaging with debates from the deaf community Language is emphasized as a marker of belonging, given that both Libras and Portuguese are officially recognized in Brazil as means of communication. The theoretical framework draws on the works of Lodi, Quadros, Skliar, and Strobel. A qualitative and descriptive methodology is adopted, guided by Moita Lopes and Minayo. The text highlights friendship between deaf and hearing individuals as a key element for inclusion, belonging, and retention. It shows that language extends beyond its instrumental function, serving as a medium for socialization and knowledge production, despite challenges in learning through Portuguese and its mediation into Libras. The study concludes that strengthening Libras in everyday university life contributes to more equitable and respectful relationships.
