Abstract

The present paper aims at analysing, explaining and classifying the Binomial by means of a corpus composed of 150 examples of that kind of grammatical structure found in Brazilian Portuguese. Binomials can be defined as phraseological sequences in which two words pertaining to the same class, generally connected by a preposition, become a fixed formula. Sintactically, Binomials are characterized as a case of word combinability (with frequent irreversibility of their components), and semantically they can be compared to idioms, with which they share the metaphorical meaning.
