Abstract

The analysis of political transitions, regardless of how they took place, is often focused on transformations and ruptures. The elements of continuity, which can be seen at multiple levels, are given insufficient attention. This introductory article will approach some of the theoretical questions featured in the thematic issue. Attention will be given to the division of historical time and to the consequences of the chronological beacons chosen for research projects; the notions of continuity and change will be studied; and the centrality of all those topics in the studies of political transitions will be debated. We argue that the interpretation of the past depends on how those issues are – or not – recognized by researchers. At the end, it is concluded that a transversal analysis between political regimes allows the recognition of fictional ruptures and the identification of hidden continuities, changing the understanding of the past and its influence on the present.
