Abstract

Recovering an ethnographic research experience in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, in this article I discuss the relationship between knowledge, memories, imitations and creative processes among ecological farmers. Between 2008 and 2009, I joined ecological family farmers in different situations, especially at meetings, technical visits and at street-markets. In addition, I have conducted individual interviews with them. Knowledge is linked to memories and the practices of previous generations, but farmers' sense of experimentation is fundamental in everyday activities, showing itself in a dance between imitation, adaptation and creation. The knowledge that circulates is part of a culture heritage: this knowledge is updated, recomposed, renewed and generates diversity. Such a process comes from relationships in agriculture, therefore, involving non-living beings and non-human living beings whose dynamics of generation, maturation and interactions are not fully controlled by humans.
