Abstract

The traditional writing of memories separated childhood and adulthood. Without an exact chronological order, Pedro Nava describes episodes of his childhood in Baú de Ossos (Trunk of Bones, 1972) through a collection of family anecdotes, short stories and personal narratives recounted with a persuasive and poetical style. Testimonies as memorialistic writings are typical in the stories collected in popular culture. Some Nava’s relatives and friends become potential narrators that reminds him of his story and childhood memories. The structure of these narratives introduces elements of fairy tales, folktales and myths intersect with History. This essay examines the role of popular narratives as an essential component for reconstruction of Nava’s childhood memories. The analysis adopts the theoretical perspectives of the psychologist Bruno Bettelheim, and the philosophers Gaston Bachelard, Walter Benjamin and Paul Ricouer.
