Abstract

The objective of this article is to present notes that help to develop a critical approach and the proposition of an agenda that discusses the need for a conceptual review of the conception of Social Determinants of Health (SDH) from the social sciences. The SDH, proposed by the World Health Organization, are fundamental to identify health inequities and constitute a central orientation to produce fair health policies. Power, equity, inequalities, and differences are its basic concepts, and these categories must be rethought in the face of contemporary social transformations, also as a way of contributing to the reflection on the health-disease process and its relations with the social. To this end, we propose as a starting point the articulation of three perspectives: Rai ner Forst’s critical theory of justice; the notion of articulation and identity, as proposed by Sergio Costa (2019); and the assumption of intersectionality as a method and political postulate, or, as Patricia Collins and Sirma Bilge (2021) put it, as a form of intelligence of the world that seeks to explain the complexities of the world as well as people and human experiences.
