Abstract

This article presents the development of the elderly care in Japan, highlighting the particular characteristics of this type of activity. The research data were obtained from three institutions in Japan, from March until July, 2011, through direct observations and interviews with caregivers, nurses and managers. Interviews were also performed in four institutions which provide related service by employing home caregivers for the elderly. Although this article focuses on the Japanese case, the case will be compared with both French and Brazilian cases, which were also object of fieldwork during 2011.
