Abstract

Medicine - an industrial pharmaceutical product - has become a central object of study in medical anthropology over the past ten years. The article reviews the historical conditions that led anthropologists, until then interested in the "remedies" from indigenous knowledge, to consider medicines. After a presentation of the theoretical approaches, which are the authority in this matter, the relationship between medicine and culture is discussed. Recent studies are presented referring to five thematic axes: polysemy and the drug "chain"; antiretroviral multiterapies, requested by doctors and meanings for patients; studies in political and critical anthropology of therapeutic systems, the "iatrogenic" dimension of medicines; the emergence of neotraditional drugs. Research perspectives regarding mainly the domain of scientific and industrial production of medicines are discussed.
