Abstract

This article analyzes how modes of subjectivation and embodiment sustain Muslim conversion at the Mosque of Barretos (SP). Understanding Islam as a discursive tradition (Asad, 1986) and based on the argument of my interlocutors that Islam is a "code of life", I examine the pedagogical side of this project of self-transformation, which aims to develop virtuous desires, emotions, acts and behaviors. Through the analysis of two spiritual exercises - the obligatory prayer [salat] and a Sufi style of meditation [dhikr] - as well as a sermon [khutba], this work reflects on some of the efforts of Muslim people in their daily lives to achieve ethical excellence in the light of Islamic norms.
