Abstract

“God is good and the Devil isn’t bad too”, says the popular wisdom. Treated by the peasant by a very peculiar way, the Devil seems to lose his murky biblical appearance going up to the land and living among the men of antiquity, especially the peasants, and, apparently unconcerned about lead the humankind to the eternal damnation, he had been busy during many years building bridges all over Europe, a work undertaken by many different premises. Are numerous the folkloric reports about the bridges built by the Devil and many of them are found around Portugal, each one with their respective tale. This article presents the main portuguese folk narratives related to the most lurid civil engineer of history and proposes a reflection about the meaning of the diabolical figure in the field.
