The orality in Ponciá Vicêncio (2003) a pulsion of afro descent memory

Abstract

This article aims to present the importance of orality in the novel Ponciá Vicêncio (2003), by Conceição Evaristo. In the novel the orality is portrayed by the voice of Ponciá the main character, who tirelessly seeks to find her family again, with her lost identity and inasmuch, see fulfilled the promise of her grandfather “Vô Vicêncio”. However, in order to fulfill this promise it will be necessary that Ponciá, in a consciousness decision denies any written form that doesn’t aggregate feelings and values inherent to her identity, to this Ponciá must understand that written only reaches sense when represents the experiences of whom writes it. Therefore, the orality will be constructed through the memories collected by the griot Nêngua Kainda who will encourage Ponciá to have an encounter with her descendent histories, but mostly to have a reunion with her afro descent memory which will reaffirm her identity, and by this way the promise of Vô Vicêncio will be realized.
