The political dimension of materialism between Quentin Meillassoux's speculative proposal and Louis Althusser's theory of philosophy

In this article we propose to establish a relationship between the "speculative materialism" of Quentin Meillassoux and the materialist philosophy of Louis Althusser. If both materialisms are defined on the basis of the affirmation of an objective dimension, external to the subject, and of the possibility of knowing it, they nevertheless differ on a fundamental point: the register of the space constituted by social practices that exceeds and determines philosophy. The aim of this article is, in this sense, to elucidate and ponder this distance between one materialism and the other, in order to account for the difference between them in terms of the scope and political meaning of the theses that characterize them.Downloads
