Abstract

This text is based on ethnographic researches about the relationships between people and Afro-descendant collectives in Caribbean and Latin American with monuments, artifacts, performances, artworks, collections, food, spiritual and ‘natural’ beings, and landscapes. It aims to discuss in which way processes and belonging practices, ways of recreation and transformation of self, reparation and liberation practices are related to agencies and materialities in afro-diasporic socialities. These processes and practices are articulated to historicities constituted by innumerable agents and institutions conventionally called “moderns”. For this purpose, it discusses how, in certain classic and contemporary fields of “Afro-American anthropology”, such articulations, proposed by a Caribbean anthropology, were ignored.
