Bolor (1968), by Augusto Abelaira, Finisterra. Paisagem e Povoamento (1978), by Carlos de Oliveira, and Um beijo dado mais tarde (1990), by Maria Gabriela Llansol, re already paradigmatic works in the context of Portuguese narrative in the 20th century. Guided by distinct aesthetic, thematic, and ideological principles, they all participate in a general context of the mutation of traditional narrative construction paradigms and challenge the truth and accessibility of referents. They project modes of perception that are less univocal and categorical, contradicting "the usual dichotomies of conceptual thinking." Michel Collot designates these modes of perception as "thought landscape." Within these narrative universes, spatiotemporal dimensions play a crucial role in sustaining the problem of referentiality in fiction, compelling characters (and readers) to confront the constructed nature of narrative universes and the fictionality of referents.
