Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the situation of the deceased Mother in Mia Couto’s novel Jesusalém (2009). Based on the discussion of memory and forgetting, this paper aims to investigate the paradoxical state of the Mother in Jesusalém, namely her present absence. Firstly, we adopted Michel Foucault’s (2013) concept of heterotopia and Aleida Assmann’s (2012a) metaphor of the grave to interpret the prescription of forgetting. We found that forgetting is instrumentalized as a strategy of governance, aimed at re-editing collective memory through dissociation and repression. Secondly, Aleida Assmann’s (2011) idea of trace is used to explore the fragments of memory that, on the one hand, appear materially on the skins of the inhabitants and, on the other hand, are carried by visitors from outside due to the accessibility of the heterotopia. During this process, we realize the convertibility between forgetting and memory, as well as how non-verbal traces can be archived as a realm of memory. In this regard, our conclusion is that the Mother’s state constitutes an existence of trauma, since she is absent as unassimilable memory and is present simultaneously as unpacified forgetting.
