Monteiro Lobato and Mário de Andrade were the Brazilian writers who most devoted themselves to photography in the first half of the 20th century. They pictured friends and families, journeys in Brazil and in the United States, historical monuments and oil wells, natural and human landscapes. Despite having been amateurs and men of letters, at some point in their lives both believed that their images should reach the public, that they would be able to express something about Brazil or about themselves. The most usual versions of the history of Brazilian literature recounts their aesthetic antagonism. What can their photographs tell us about this rivalry? What other histories of the modern would this comparison raise? Taking into consideration the drawing up of the photographer-writer by the historical avant-gardes - in particular the Soviet ones - and the mechanical nature of the camera, we seek to observe the affinities and distinctions that characterize how these authors appropriate and picture photographic modernity.
