Abstract

My proposal is to conduct an analysis of the two main texts written by Afrânio Coutinho about Machado de Assis, noting how the author’s position changes, between one and another, as a result of acquiring an arsenal of new concepts about literary criticism. Concurrently with this analysis, I intend to highlight such concepts as well as their absence, indicating its importance for the renewal of the theories that Coutinho would defend in most part of his career.
