This article aims at discussing briefly some issues related to the assessment and certification of English language teachers, as well as presenting a proposal for action in teachers’ assessment in pre- and continuing education. Such a proposal is based predominantly on the works by Porter, YoungsandOdden (2001) andDolz e Schneuwly (1998), and consists of five elements: the objective of assessment, the object of assessment, the agent of assessment, the nature of assessment and the moment of assessment. By means of such elements this work, supported by Fidalgo (2006) andScaramucci (2006), advocates that assessment and the teaching/learning process of (future) English teachers are inseparable.
