Abstract

The occurence of Sarcocystis in the hearts of 130 zebus was studied in a slaughterhouse in Londrina - PR. The myocardium of the samples were examined after digestion in a pepsin solution and stainning of histological sections with Hematoxin-Eosin. The examination after digestion in pepsin solution revealed the presence of Sarcocystis sp as pradiozoites (X = 13.3 x 4.1u m) in all the samples. Histological examination detected the cyst in 126 (96,9%) animals with characteristics smooth and thin walls ( < 8 um) of the species S. cruzi. None of the samples showed the presence of S. hirsuta and S. hominis. The cysts were always microscopic (X= 127,3 x 44.2 um). The cysts did not show inflamatory reactions around them but slight infiltration of interstitial mononuclear cells was noted in 28 (22, 5%) animals.
