Design management on Return on Investment (ROI): a theoretical-conceptual review

Abstract

This paper presents a theoretical-conceptual review that aims to discuss the integration of two themes: design management and return on investment (ROI). The study is motivated by the realization that, despite the positive impact of the design activities for the companies, managers claim there is still a communication deficit between designers (qualifiers) and executives (quantifiers). In this sense, researchers and designers have struggled to reinforce the value of design in business. The method adopted is a combination of systematic and narrative bibliographical reviews, resulting in a theoretical framework that aims to support the objective of this study. Finally, measuring the impact of design management on ROI is complex. Gaps are pointed at the multifaceted value of the design process.
