Call for papers - Dossier: Death and the process of dying in the Social Sciences: perspectives around a multidimensional phenomena (Mediações, vol. 28, n. 1 - 2023/1).
Editors: Rachel Aisengart Menezes (UFRJ) and Lucas Faial Soneghet (UFRJ).
This proposal is based on the field of interdisciplinary studies on death and dying, with emphasis on sociological and anthropological perspectives. Taking death and the different processes, rituals and practices around dying as its themes, this proposal privileges empirical research produced in Brazil, while also welcoming theoretical papers. The topic of death and dying has gained relevance in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, multiplying controversies in both public and academic debate. Writing on this theme tends to be multifaceted, touching on topics such as health and illness, corporality, affects, care, medical knowledge, the impact of inequality and precarious social conditions at the end of life, amongst others. Empirical and theoretical contributions that address death and dying as social problems will be welcome, thus incorporating the development of a growing area of research in the Social Sciences in Brazil.
Call for papers will be open until November 15, 2022; unpublished texts will be accepted in Portuguese, Spanish and English. Contributions should be submitted through the journal's online system:
