Beliefs in applied linguistics: what "common sense linguistics" thinks?
Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze the comments of laypeople on a Facebook post regarding the opposition between linguistics and grammar, based on the concept of beliefs in Applied Linguistics (AL) (Barcelos, 2004, 2007) and what can be defined as 'everyday metalanguage' (Fiorin, 2004). Specific objectives include observing the manifestation of linguistic prejudices (Bagno, 2015) that result in exclusions, segregation, and humiliation through language. The methodology initially involves a bibliographic review to discuss the key themes, followed by an exploratory analysis of the comments based on criteria drawn from studies on beliefs in AL (Bagno, 2015; Fiorin, 2004) and others, with results being systematically organized in synoptic tables.
