Letramentos (auto)críticos decoloniais na aula de inglês a partir da poesia de Carolina Maria de Jesus

Abstract

This article has two objectives: 1) to present the application of a critical-decolonial lesson on racism, in which I use the poem "Humanidade" by Carolina Maria de Jesus (1996) to address the proposed theme, in a second-year class of the Technical High School at the Federal Institute of Mato Grosso do Sul (IFMS); 2) to analyze how the students constructed meanings during the discussions in light of critical-decolonial theories. The present study was based on the theoretical conceptions of critical literacies found in Cervetti, Pardales e Damico (2001), Duboc (2016), Souza (2011, 2023), Monte Mór (2019), Freire (2023a, 2023b), Ferraz (2012, 2014) and the reflections on decoloniality are grounded in the studies of Maldonado-Torres (2007, 2016), Mignolo and Walsh (2018), Quijano (2000). The corpora include the audio recording of the class, the poem, and the critical questions raised during the discussion. The research employed a qualitative, autoethnography/self-critique reflexive (Takaki, 2020). The analysis of the dialogues revealed that the students developed a critical stance on social issues, presenting a decolonial attitude (Maldonado-Torres, 2007). However, the debates did not advance to actions that would alter mechanisms of invisibility (Maldonado-Torres, 2007), indicating the need for continuous efforts in both basic and higher education to encourage students to critically reflect on the discourses that shape us as stakeholders.
