Abstract

Personal memories are conventionally viewed as a field devoted to the conservation of past. But recently, controversies and researches have arisen regarding the representation of fiction and non-fiction in autobiography, biography, memoirs and “witness literature”. Pedro Nava’s memoirs offer particular glimpses to characterize the function of memory in his creative process and effort to reconstruct the past. The formation of a reader, another question examined by the memoirist, has implications for studies in culture, history, social memory and literature. This essay aims to expose accounts and essayistic digressions presents in Balão cativo (1973) referents to the theme of literary initiation by pointing out some authors, influences and literary works that contributed to Nava’s first reading experiences. The comparative analysis of such excerpts suggests that the author seeks to evoque histories and reminiscences to connect events of the past with biographical profiles and questions on poetry, prose, emotions, and personal identity.
