The Erotics of Black Female Being: Miriam Alves’s Poetics

This paper proposes an interpretation of the eroticism present in the poetry of Miriam Alves (São Paulo, 1952), published in the books Momentos de busca (1983) and Estrelas no dedo (1985), focusing on the poetic construction of Black bodies. Drawing on the theoretical contributions of bell hooks (1995; 2025), Beatriz Nascimento (2006), and Cristian Souza de Sales (2011), the analysis approaches eroticism as an expression of freedom and a life-affirming force. Having begun her literary career in the Cadernos Negros series, Alves has developed a body of work that challenges mechanisms of control sustained by racial and gender stereotypes, as well as the hypersexualized images historically imposed upon Black people. In this sense, her poetry calls Black womanhood to experience the fullness of an “erotics of being,” as Black female bodies move beyond the position of objects of desire or subordination to become desiring subjects, thereby affirming their right to pleasure and life itself.
