This article analyzes the comedic element in Livro do Avesso: o pensamento de Edite, written by Elisa Lucinda, whose aesthetic choice of literary fabulation is guided by humor. Based on theories of laughter, particularly the work of Henri Bergson (2018), Vladimir Propp (1992), and Sigmund Freud (2015), the critical nature of humor in the character Edite’s thoughts is highlighted. These thoughts navigate the comic but reveal the tragic, especially regarding ethnic-racial issues. In this context, there is dialogue with Grada Kilomba (2019), bell hooks (2010, 2019), and, in literary terms, with Cuti (2010). It is observed that Edite’s thoughts serve as central resources for constructing humor in this literary work, granting the character a sense of freedom to express opinions on any subject. In the reversed perspective of life, within its untamed flow, flaws and vices of individuals are primarily exposed, thus creating a space for freely critiquing racist discourse without fear of humor losing its impact, as well as for addressing what Adilson Moreira (2019) defines as “recreational racism”.
