This article presents an analysis of the construction of the concept of “Literature for the Infancies,” which was developed in the context of a 2024 master’s research titled “Teacher, may I speak?”: What do Black and non-Black first-grade children think about stories, illustrations, and authors of children’s books with Afro-Brazilian and African themes?”. The researchers’ choice not to use the term “children’s literature” is justified by the need to acknowledge the historical trajectory of literature aimed at children and to understand childhood from an African and Afro-Brazilian perspective. The proposed concept of “Literature for the Infancies” seeks to clarify the growing adoption of this term in various literary events and by researchers, emphasizing the importance of lived experiences and the relational dynamics between adults and books directed toward the children’s universe.
