The article outlines some general aspects of Afrofuturist fiction produced by Black Brazilian writers. In addition to considering the propositions initially developed by the American scholar Mark Dery (1994) on “Afrofuturism,” it reflects on the ways Contemporary Brazilian Literature engages with the present. From this perspective, the article proposes recognizing Afrofuturist fiction recently produced in Brazil as a fantastic modality within Contemporary Brazilian Literature, speculating on the current condition of Black Brazilian subjects in alternative settings. Some of the possibilities of this fictional approach are identified through a significant group of Black Brazilian writers who have emerged in this century, particularly since the second decade. These include Julio Pecly, Lu Ain-Zaila, Aldri Anunciação, Fábio Kabral, Ale Santos, and Sandra Menezes. To theoretically support these considerations on Afrofuturist fiction, the propositions of Beatriz Resende (2008) and Karl Erik Schollhammer (2009) on Contemporary Brazilian Literature were utilized, alongside reflections by Kênia Freitas and José Messias (2018) and Anne Caroline Quiangala (2020) on Afrofuturism.
