Taking contemporary fantastic literature as its focus, this work examines the contributions of Nestarez (2022, 2023), who introduces the concept of a fantastic genre aimed at evoking chills, and the short story “A Gruta” from the collection Maldito Sertão (2017) by potiguar author Márcio Benjamin, which features the appearance of a supernatural creature known as a ‘dry body’. Since the creature’s manifestation within the backcountry’s time-space drives the plot, we apply Bakhtin’s theory of the chronotope, which suggests that the chronotope guides the plot by tying and untying its narrative knots. We propose the existence of a horror chronotope formed by three key chronotopes: encounter, threshold, and crisis. Our analysis is rooted in language studies, with a focus on discursive practices through the lens of Bakhtin’s Circle, as well as contributions from studies on fantastic literature and horror.
