Research into primary sources uncovers authors, narratives, and discourses previously overlooked or neglected by various fields of study, including Literary Studies. This article aims to present a selection of data gleaned from 19th-century Brazilian Catholic religious newspapers dating from the 1860s. These newspapers not only condemned the reading of novels but also featured fictional prose amidst the ideological and political turmoil known as the Religious Question. The chosen decades encompass the period both preceding and following the outbreak of the conflict in 1872. Within these newspapers, reading practices—be it through articles or the publication of narratives—served as a means of discourse and critical reasoning aimed at guiding the reading public. Thus, these sources reveal the potential of fiction as a tool for persuasion and the dissemination of ideological precepts, including religious ones. It is hoped that the insights provoked by this study will encourage further exploration of dogmatic periodicals in the field of Literary Studies, recognizing them as rich sources of discourse and publications that invite reflection and interrogation extending beyond mere historical-literary recovery. Rather, they become integral to political agendas and debates.
