Abstract

In this article, we present an interpretative proposal for J. M. Coetzee’s Desonra (Disgrace) in the light of romantic irony. Through it, we refer to the possible knowledge generated and transmitted by the novel. The guiding hypothesis is that it shows a literary narrative that presents overwhelming problems of the contemporary world, such as significant social and cultural changes, and situations inherent to the human condition. We approach the issue of romantic irony considering it from a philosophical perspective that enables our interpretive proposal.
