Abstract

I will deal with the collective memory in Conceição Evaristo’s novels Ponciá Vicêncio and Becos da Memória. The author’s Afro-descendant gaze assures to us through the characters’ story the importance of this aspect on Afro-Brazilian authors’ texts. According to Ricouer (2000), memory is built as an identity criterion and it serves to the latter. Our Afro-Brazilian authors confirm, therefore, a new thinking about the Black Diaspora and they bring marks of this collective looking to their literature. Those marks are to the writers a kind of mover to their narrative or poetry.
