Orphaned author and reader: Álvaro Lins’s path and the consequences of the end of newspaper pagebottom criticism in Brazil

Álvaro Lins was one of the great critics of Brazilian newspaper pagebottom literary critiscism. Exponent of the literary criticism in the 1940s, his newspaper activity ceased for the accusation of being an “impressionist”. Then, Lin’s absence was filled with book reviews. The pagebotoom critics decadence had begun with the rise of the “new critic”, in mid 1950s, and it was intensified by the transformations which took place in the newspaper media through the same period. With the new format of newspaper text, readers lost the “guidelines” that seasoned their taste for books.Downloads
