Abstract

The unfolding of the reader-response theory as coined by Iser towards a more empirical understanding of the relationship between reader and text open new possibilities for inquiry of diverse texts, beyond its predicable application to the fi ctional literary text. Diaries that had only been studied as subsidiary and peripheral texts can now be dealt with as a textual practice that overpass the intimacy and the isolation – traits historically linked to the notion of private writings. As a result of the new approach, the convergence of more recent theoretical tendencies will evolve the initial concerns on the studies of diaries and bring together the role of readership and identity formation in this genre of private writing.
