After the analysis of the political and social relevance of the discourses produced in the English language for contemporary society, this paper proposes the discussion of a practice of education for the teacher of English which aims at the building of his/her intellectual and professional autonomy. The history of the teaching of English as a foreign language in Brazilian schools reveals not only the failure of the structural integrative approach, inherited from the so-called free courses, but also a conception of teacher education as mere training. As an alternative to that view, this paper proposes a practice of teacher education based on the elaboration, implementation and critical evaluation of learning-teaching projects in school contexts. What we hope is to help student teachers to be able to reflect upon the context in which their teaching takes place, thus generating practices which fit better the needs and interests of their students.
