Languages in contact in the Amazon: Portuguese and Parkatêjê

This article aims to present a situation of contact between Portuguese and an indigenous language in the Amazon. Based on a theoretical framework from Sociolinguistics, examples of possible loanwords and code-switching extracted from texts published in books by indigenous authors will be observed. The methodology used was bibliographical research followed by the selection of excerpts with loanwords and code-switching characteristics, considering the text by Treffers-Daller (2023). The sociolinguistic situation of the Parkatêjê language did not allow the creation of a monolingual or bilingual corpus through which the phenomena under study could be contrasted. Therefore, the research was carried out on qualitative basis relying on the interpretation of data based on studies already carried out on loanwords and code-switching. As a result, it can be attested that both phenomena are common in that contact environment, with lexical and grammatical loanwords, in addition to a repertoire of code-switching occurrences, in both languages.
