Epistemology and history of enunciation and of figurativity concepts in the french semiotics

In this paper, we examine through historiography the concepts of enunciation and figurativity in order to demonstrate how they emerged and developed in the French semiotics, discipline that is concerned with the meaning and how it is built in the discourse. Considering the operationality of both concepts in the discourse and the fact that in the discursive semantics the figurativity is responsible for the recognition of discourse as true, we also seek to explicit how the enunciation and the figurativity are related. We realize that both concepts were previously conceived as elements of the analysis only present in the discursive semantics, but they began to integrate all levels in the meaning generative path in a second moment. Besides, both started to occupy a prominent place in the semiotics after De l’imperfection was published by A. J. Greimas. To achieve this result, we applied to the research the linguistic historiography methodology, discipline known for its description and interpretation of products and the results of history works of a science or a concept through a survey of authors and his bibliography. The method developed by researchers as E. F. K. Koerner, P. Swiggers and C. Altman, consists of periodizing, interpreting the transformations occurred in the concepts and describing them, by aiming the establishment, the foundation and the development of theory or the historiographed concept, which, in this study, are the concepts of enunciation and figurativity from the studies done by A. J. Greimas, J. Fontanille, J.-C. Coquet, D. Bertrand, among other semioticians.
