Dialogues between literature and painting in Visconde de Taunay’s travel narratives

The trips that Visconde de Taunay, still very young, undertook within the Brazilian territory, as well as the cultural upbringing provided by his family of French artists, definitely marked his literary production. In his works, the verbal construction remains in constant dialogue with painting, as it is possible to analyze, for example, in A Marcha das Forças (1865-1866), Inocência (1972), A Retirada da Laguna (1972), Memórias (1908) and Viagens de Outrora (1921). Pictorial descriptions, references to light and shadow, framing and a lexicon related to the visual arts are some of the instruments that Taunay uses to generate a suspension effect in the narrative which is capable of leading the reader to the contemplation of images and pictures made present in the verbal weaving.Downloads
