Abstract

This work intends to highlight some of the great contributions to the History and Criticism of Literature, given by Afrânio Coutinho (1911 – 2000), which concerns with the epistemological and methodological construction of A Literatura no Brasil (1959), work initiated in 1952, which helped to spread an esthetical view to describe, analyze and interpret the literary phenomenon. In the space of origin and tradition, Afrânio Coutinho encouraged the discussion concerned with an identity for brazilian literature, called the “process of literary discolonization”.
