In this paper, I intend to propose a critical reading of the short stories “O Enjeitado” (03/28 and 03/29/1839) and “A Mãe-Irmã” (04/10/1839), which were produced by the afrodescendant writer Francisco de Paula Brito. Discussion will depart from an approach which aims to highlight and evaluate how gender and ethnicity relations are present in the above mentioned narratives. In these works, the writer uses fiction to problematize both women’s submission towards men and afrodescendant’s towards the white, moving to the fearlessness presented by the female and black characters opposed to the slaveholding patriarchal society of the brazilian 18th century.Downloads
