Pai-Raio and Tia Balbina: blacks and sorcerers

This essay analizes the image of coloured enchanters in pre-abolition Brazil based on characters Pai-Raiol (As vítimas-algozes, Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, 1869) and tia Balbina (José do Patrocínio, 1877). The author summarize the books; analizes the refered characters features and their differences from each other; and approaches the authors vision related to their catholic background and the general coloured and enchanters in their cultural context.Downloads
