This article proposes an analysis of the slave characters present in the three narratives written by Joaquim Manuel in his book As vítimas-algozes, published in 1869. The narratives “Simeão, o crioulo”, “Pai-Raiol, o feiticeiro” and “Lucinda, a mucama” demarcate the slaves as wickeds and traitors (and, therefore, revengeful hangmen), and their owners as kind, generous and gullible (and, therefore, main slavery victims), configuring characterizations by which the narrator created by Macedo argues that the biggest beneficiaries of the abolition will not be the slaves, but the own white men.Downloads
