Abstract

The objective is to present a reading of the short story "A Estória do Homem do Pinguelo", by Guimarães Rosa. We will work on the role of otherness in the constitution of identity, whether with regard to the narrators present in the story, or with regard to the characters. It will be concluded that, in "The Story of the Man of Pinguelo", the knowledge of otherness leads to the conquest of identity, and, from this knowledge, the designs already determined by destiny can be better realized. Therefore, the link between the tale and the tragic will be achieved.
