Abstract

This text aims to present the result of a research about beliefs that teachers in service reveal about reading and reading teaching in mother tongue. The teachers that participate of the research work in elementary education and middle schools in cities of the interior of Parana. In the methodology we bases in Lüdke and André (1986), Barcelos (2001; 2004), Abrahão (2006). Theoretically, we discuss conception of literacy (SOARES, 1998; KLEIMAN, 2002, 2004), Reading (LOPES, 2006; OLIVEIRA, 2007) and beliefs (SANTOS, 1996; BARCELOS, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2006). Among the beliefs that we find, we can highlight these ones: a) The work with reading is useful to teach grammar; b) the good reader speak and write well; c) In the school­book there isn´t enough reading activities, so could be complemented.
