This article intends to discuss the reading in the teaching of mother language. However, throughout this study, we sought to answer the following questions: Why the reading is worked in the school with the only aim of teaching to read? Why is taught only one way of reading if the readers use different forms according to the goals they want to reach? This paper is supported on authors as Lerner (2002), Kleiman (2007) and Geraldi (1996). The results still point that there is a practice of reading activities still centered in mechanical skills of coding writing.
