As an outcome of grammaticalization, the form daí has been conveyed to several grammatical functions in Brazilian Portuguese. Under the theoretical guideline of linguistic functionalism, this work investigates these processes of change. To this end, the following are used: (i) data from texts written in Portuguese from the XIII century to XX century; (ii) 48 interviews from the VARSUL Data Base, which were collected during the last decade of the XX century. Based on syntactic, semantic and pragmatic evidence, this research proposed trajectories probably followed by daí from spatial deictic uses to connective ones, establishing cohesive links between discourse segments. Four mechanisms seem to act over these change processes: metaphor, metonymy, reanalysis and analogy.
