Critical theory and civil society: towards democratization

The objective of this research is to establish a dialogue between civil society, critical theory and the meaning of democratization in Brazil. This is qualitative research based on documentary sources, with a theoretical-conceptual background, based on bibliographical research of analytical categories within and beyond the binomials "capital x work" and "public x private". Critical theory was mobilized to explain the selective development through which vulnerable groups gain access to citizenship and the democratic rule of law. The notion of civil society gave life to the old notions of national liberation, which had lost strength with the crisis of democracy and real socialism, rekindling ideas of self-management and autonomy in the former colonies, reflecting the political struggle on the peripheral side of the world-system. The research results point to the need for "citizenship beyond the existing one" (Alvarez, Dagnino and Escobar, 2000), and to the limits of democracy in Brazil (Biroli, 2018), challenging us to continue studies on the subject to promote social protagonism.
