This experiment was conducted in the organic area of Canguiri experimental farm, in the metropolitan area of Curitiba-PR, aiming to evaluate the growth of open pollinated onion cultivars, in organic system, seeded in January – a nontraditional period. The experimental design was completely randomized, with three replications and seven cultivars: Franciscana IPA-10 (purple), Vale Ouro IPA-11 e Brisa IPA-12 (from Empresa Pernambucana de Pesquisa Agropecuária – IPA), Alfa Tropical (from Embrapa Hortaliças), Alfa São Francisco (VIII cycle) e Alfa São Francisco-RT (thrips resistant – genotype under test; from Embrapa Semi-árido) e BR-29 (Topseed- Agristar). Biometric linear and nonlinear evaluations and productive characteristics were undertaken. We verified that the organic production of onion established in a nontradicional period in metropolitan area of Curitiba is possible, mainly for the following cultivars of Embrapa: Alfa São Francisco, Alfa Tropical and Alfa São Francisco-RT that showed the best performance and productivity.
