Abstract

For approximately two hundred years, national symbols, such as flags, monuments, public buildings, historical figures and national anthems, have played important roles in the lives of modern societies (Hobsbawm, 1982, 1983). Based  on the theoretical concepts of Generic Structure Potential and semantic attributes by Hasan (1984, 1989, 1996) and the concept of Exaltation of Landscapes by Souza (2008, 2017), the main objective of this research is to investigate the presence of the element Praising the Landscape in the lyrics of national anthems of all the 12 countries of South America, as well as their main lexical-grammatical characteristics. The research revealed that only the national anthems of Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Guyana and Suriname presented this structural element in their compositions, and that most frequently lexical-grammatical uses occur through nominal groups formed by the specification of a natural object and an adjective that praises it. We expect to contribute to the theoretical framework related to the national hymns and to the studies in the Linguistic fiedl, specifically in systemic-functional linguistics.
