Headhunters and the challenges of interpreting artistic images

This article intends to compare the interpretative procedures of Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968) and Aby Warburg (1866-1929), based on the artistic motif of women headhunter, that has caught both interest. The first part of this study is a revision of Panofsky's iconographic analisys of a dubious image of Salome or Judith. The second part deals with Warburg's fascination for the plastic form of body's posture and the dramatic gesture of women headhunter. The third and last part, explores roots and developments of the artistic motif of women headhunter in the history of art, aiming a critical review of interpretation procedures related to the Warburg Institut.Downloads
